Our Little Dribbler

Quilt Therapy Posted on March 3, 2011 by TK HarrisonMarch 1, 2011

Somehow, we ended up with that LAST CHILD who is very athletic.  She’s also very competitive.  Neither of these traits are from her parents, so I’m wondering if we got the right child in the hospital!

They have a four-week program at the school to introduce the elemtary children into basketball.  My athletic kid not only earned a participation trophy, she also won the female MVP award for her class!  Oy.

Reduce Stress? HAH!

Quilt Therapy Posted on March 2, 2011 by TK HarrisonMarch 1, 2011

One of the things that has been recommended to me by people with MS and by my MS specialist is that I need to reduce stress in my life.  Let’s take a look at my schedule for the next two weeks and see where I can trim the fat:

  • Tuesday – CEO of the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas visiting our town for the first time ever, with a meet and greet with the local community at the coffee shop.
  • Tuesday – I have to stop at our local apple store (this town in Texas used to be known as the apple capital of the world) and choose a gift for the troop to give to the CEO that is indicative of our town/region.
  • Tuesday – CEO of the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas visiting an elementary school in our county in the evening to have a chance to visit with the Girl Scouts of our county (including my own two Girl Scout daughers) in the evening.
  • Girl Scout cookie sales have finished up and as the cookie mom, I have to do the final financial documentation and end-of-sale documentation for the Service Unit’s cookie mom.
  • Tuesday – Husband and son have Cub Scouts and I’m not real sure how they are going to get there since we only have one working vehicle.
  • Wednesday – No Nap!  Grocery store and Sacred Arts class after school.
  • Thursday – Girl Scouts in the evening.
  • Thursday – DD#1 has one act play practice in the evening.
  • Friday – Service Unit (county) Thinking Day event, for which I have yet to finish the quilt made out of official Girl Scout fabric (haven’t even cut out the fabric yet!) to be awarded to the winning ticket-holder.  Not only will our troop have a booth but I volunteered to be in charge of the event, so I will be pulling double duty by making sure everything goes smoothly for both my troop and the Girl Scout Service Unit.  This was one of the founder of Girl Scouts, Juliett Gordon Low’s most important holidays on the Girl Scout calendar and as far as I know, our Service Unit has not recognized it in many years.  I aim to change that.
  • Saturday – cook all day for DD#2’s confirmation the next day.  And I predict a BIG NAP!
  • Sunday – DD#2 gets confirmed in our church, with a meal and reception immediately following.
  • Monday – DD#2 has a tennis meet and husband needs to attend the School Board meeting.
  • Tuesday – Cub scouts for the dad-person and son-man.
  • Wednesday – back to the grocery store and church class for the younger kids.
  • Wednesday – DD#1 takes their one act play on the road for a festival in a nearby school.
  • Thursday – our youngest child turns TEN!
  • Thursday – DD#1 has one act play practice,

Those things are all obligations that I took on before my MS and no-stress diagnosis.  And that does not include work, feeding the kids or much needed quilt therapy!

Now, just wear am I supposed to trim the stress???

Re li able or Reli able?

Quilt Therapy Posted on March 1, 2011 by TK HarrisonMarch 1, 2011

The Sacred Arts kids at church presented an adorable puppet show on Sunday at church, which focused on the word RELIABLE.  Our son-man was Jim and he believed that God was not re li able because that would mean he would lie over and over again!  DD#3 was Jam and her puppet was sure that the word was reli able because God was really able to do everything He promised us.

In the end, they did exactly what our #1 rule is when it’s homework time in our house — LOOK IT UP!

When they looked in the dictionary, they realized the word was RELIABLE and then they were truly able to see how that described one of God’s attributes.

And then Boo was supposed to put up her audience prompting signs:

OOPS, let’s try that again 🙂

I would like to tell you I enjoy Sacred Arts immensely – and that statement is true.  But, on top of that, I just *love* the fact that my children learn so many different ways to express their faith through musical interpretation and drama.  And, to top it off, the Sacred Arts Director (who is also our church music director) gets SUCH a kick out of the kids and their antics/actions that I have fun just watching her reaction to their amazing performances!

I’d say not only is God reliable, but Ms. Judy and the kids go above and beyond that description as well!

San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo

Quilt Therapy Posted on February 21, 2011 by TK HarrisonFebruary 21, 2011

The San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo is second only to the one in Houston in size in the nation.  The commercial venues are mainly geared toward adults, but the stock show is totally created for the youth and their animals and projects.

My husband was once again a judge for the Ag-Mechanics contest, this year a lead just for the feeders.  He had a small team of two men and two college student helpers, but that was enough to have him nearly finished by lunch (one project was classified wrong so they had to judge it after lunch).  Growing up on a farm in Iowa and then marrying a man with a PhD in an ag-related field means I have never been far from my roots, even if my roots move around a lot.  I truly enjoy seeing the innovative and amazing projects the students all across the state of Texas put together.

After lunch and the final project being judged, we walked around the commercial exhibits for a  little while.  One of the first things I saw, I just knew I had to have – and told hubby it was a very early anniversary gift to ourselves …

It’s a clock made on a framed license plate from our alma mater, the University of Missouri-Columbia!  I received my B.S. there and hubster got his Ph.D. there.  I thought it was pretty cool and made him hang it on the wall beside my bed – because without my glasses, I can’t see the alarm clock on his side of the bed!

Learning to Garden

Quilt Therapy Posted on February 17, 2011 by TK HarrisonFebruary 17, 2011

Our son and his fifth and sixth grade class have been gardening and growing their own vegetable garden at school this year.  Here is a great shot of my son, who grew the best head of cabbage in his class!

The kids are being assisted by our local garden club and it has been a great learning experience for all involved.  Of course, since my husband has a huge garden, I’ve been told a number of times that our son-man has been the one teaching the teachers instead of the other way around. 🙂

He didn’t eat the cabbage (oh mom, it’s a vegetable!) but my husband shredded it up and made sauerkraut with it!  What a great learning experience for all involved!
