Quilted Kitchen: Ducks & Ducklings Quilt Block & Duck Breast and Bacon Pineapple Appetizer Recipe
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Orange: Cut FIVE (5) 3″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3″ squares & will create the horizontal & vertical center of this quilt block.)
- Light Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
- Dark Green: Cut TWO (2) 6″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Split Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. (These are paired with the Orange 3″ squares & will create the horizontal & vertical center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Light Green 3 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Dark Green 6″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Split Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)

I am a beginning quilter and liked that this was a free pattern. Since I am a beginner I need to know the amount of material to buy and the instructions to assemble the pieces.
Hi Denise! You should use your scraps to sew this quilt block together. Once you have perfected it then you can use the fabric that you want to use. I do not have the exact fabric requirements for this (or any) quilt block. You should know them once you use your scraps to sew it together. If you follow the directions on my blog post, then you shouldn’t have any trouble, sewing this quilt block together. You can look at the “Tutorials” page if you need assistance with any of the special cuts & seams.
