Quilting for Community Charity
One of the biggest noises I have made throughout my membership in our quilt group has been that we all come together to make quilts for charity. Thus far, I am proud of what we have accomplished. Not enough, in my opinion, but those we gave to were extremely grateful and the funds generated from them gave an added boost to the coffers of the chosen non-profit. We haven’t made any quilts this year for charity, but part of that is my fault in my continued quest to deal with my MS and I just haven’t attended very many quilt group meetings (read: loud woman quilting out of sight, out of mind).
I believe, as an “artist” and a member of the community that we live in, we have an obligation to help those who need it. Our chosen art is quilting so I am going to suggest that this coming year, when we make our block of the month, we make TWO apiece – keep one for ourselves and give one to charity. I certainly am not in a position to say WHAT charity we give it to (we democratically vote in quilt group), but I really dislike saving all of our quilted goodness just for friends and family – others should have the opportunity to sleep under a blanket of love, too!
This was the display we put together for our little Quilt Fest, to show that we are just as involved in our community as our community is involved in our quilt group. I hope we can add to it, in the future, and showcase as well as create more quilts for charity.
